32                               LUNATIC ASYLUMS IN BENGAL.

Of the admissions, 22 belonged to the military class, which shows a diminution with
respect to previous years, and which is explained by the cause assigned by the superintendent.

The management of the institution is carefully and ably conducted. The comfort of the
inmates is sedulously attended to, and the state of the asylum and appearance of the inmates
indicate that they were receiving all the attention and indulgences that their unfortunate
condition admits of. The superintendent gives deserved praise to Mr. De Vere, and the
establishment generally have worked well.

Employment of
the inmates.

The want of employment or rather of some occupation to amuse the inmates is
apparent; at the same time considering the class and habits of the lunatics the difficulty of
providing this is fully acknowledged, and the remark is merely made with the view to
calling attention to the subject.

The management of the asylum during the past year has been very satisfactory."

In these remarks I cordially concur. The question of providing the inmates with occupation
would be an easier one, were the institution a place of permanent residence until recovery
or death, rather than a mere resting house, until arrangements can be made for sending
them elsewhere.

67.    The asylum has sustained a great loss in the death of the matron, Mrs. De Vere.
Mr. De Vere continues to render excellent service.

68.    The accounts of the asylum compared favorably with previous years.

69.    The reports of the several institutions included in this report were received on
the dates specified in the appended memorandum.

I have the honor to be,
