LUNATIC ASYLUMS IN BENGAL.                                                    3

Comparison with
five preceding
years.

4. Statement No. 2—shows the events of the year in relation to the series and averages
of the five previous years. Table II of the appendix has been constructed on the same plan.
As compared with the preceding year, 1873 exhibits a considerable increase of population,
as indicated by the 1st January census (17.5 per cent.), rather fewer admissions, an increase
of total treated (9.9 per cent.) ; an increase of average number resident (9.7 per cent), more
discharges, more recoveries, and more deaths; a lower admission-rate, a higher discharge-
rate, a higher recovery-rate, and a somewhat lower death-rate. As compared with the five
preceding years, the increase of population is still more striking; there is a slight increase
of admissions; the admission-rate is rather lower, the discharge-rate higher; the recovery-
rate higher, and the death-rate more favorable. A comparison with the previous 10 years
renders the increase of population and admissions, decrease of admission-rate, and decrease
of death-rate more evident. These circumstances, and the causes on which they depend,
will be more fully discussed in the sequel.
