                                                                                  REMARKS.

171—Was admitted into hospital at day-break on the 2nd January, and died in collapse at 12 A.M.
159—Was attached with double pneumonia, which terminated fatally in five days. Right lung was gorged with blood and very ædematous. The
base of left lung was hepatized. Both kidneys disorganized. Large irregular cicatrizing ulcer found at lower part of rectum.
92—Was admitted into hospital with fever on the 30th October 1872. A few days afterwards he became hemiplegic on the left side. He
gradually improved, although 65 years of age, and was able to limp about with the aid of a stick, when he was attacked with inflammation of the lungs,
and died on the 12th January. Close to the posterior course of the right ventricle, and in the right hemisphere, a large cavity, the size of a walnut,
was found filled with dark clots of blood. This cavity had a living membrane, and the cerebral matter around was soft and yellow. The right lung
was congested and ædematous. The left was hepatized.
114—Was rarely out of hospital. In October 1872 was attacked with scurvy, the one case in the asylum. This was followed by pneumonia,
ulceration of fauces, and complete loss of appetite. He died of exhaustion on the 14th January. Portions of both lungs were found inflamed and
ædematous. Great anæmia of the brain, a large congested liver, and a spleen weighing 13½ ounces, were the chief pathological changes met with.
148—Was attacked with acute double pneumonia on the 7th January. Typhoid symptoms supervened, and he died on the 20th. Right lung was
hepatized throughout. The pleuræ of left lung were inflamed and thickened, and the lung itself was in the congestive stage. There was a large
" waxy" liver, weighing 3lb 12½ ounces.
7—This old woman was over 80 years of age according to the natives, but by her roll she was only 68. For many years she had been very feeble.
On the 10th January she had a slight attack of diarrhœa, which was checked; but her vitality was so much reduced by it that she gradually declined.
The cicatrices of old ulceration of the large intestines were observed. The spleen was atrophied.
144—Was admitted into hospital on arrival for dysentery and scurvy. He improved under treatment, but a relapse occurred which terminated
fatally. In the small intestines, in the cœcum, and colon, were patches of congestion. In the rectum were innumerable small circular and irregular
shaped ulcers of unhealthy character. The spleen was enlarged, weighing 11½ ounces.
47—Had violent diarrhœa on admission. This was followed by a sharp attack of ague, with great irritability of stomach. Her's was a hopeless
case from the first. The spleen weighed 11½ ounces. A large fibrous nodule was found on its lower edge. No ulceration of the bowels was found,
but a generally congested state of the mucous membrane of the small intestines.
194—On the 3rd April was admitted into hospital with inflammation of left lung; on the 4th the temperature rose to 105° 3'. Sudden collapse
came on, and he died after 12 days' illness. The left lung was hepatized throughout. The right was healthy. The spleen was enlarged, weighing 15 ounces.
The liver was "waxy," of enormous size, weighing 4lb 15½ ounces. The kidneys were both disorganized, and albumen had been present in the urine
throughout illness.
64—Had become a permanent inmate of hospital. Diarrhœa, anæmia, and finally pericarditis, were the different diseases from which he suffered.
An epileptic fit followed by profound coma preceded death. The brain was small, weighing 1lb 15 ounces only. Great sub-arachnoid effusion was present.
There was great effusion into the pericardium, and the membrane was much thickened. The aortic valves were defective owing to inflammatory deposit.
The liver was large and " waxy."
127—Was taken ill with cholera at 3 P.M. on the 23rd April, and died in imperfect reaction after 24 hours' illness.
152—On admission to hospital no satisfactory diagnosis was arrived at. He was weak and bloodless. The day before he died he was restless, passing
the night without sleep. He complained of pain in the region of the heart, and of great thirst. Before death he fell into a collapsed state. A large
fatty heart was found, weighing 14 ounces. The muscular tissue was also pale and fatty. The valves were healthy. The spleen was small; the liver
of a pale fawn color.
72—For months this man had been led about and fed like a child, and the few words he spoke had reference to twelve rupees. On the afternoon of
the 24th May inflammation of the left lung set in, and he died on the 28th. A large portion of the posterior lobe of the right hemisphere was absent,
and on the outside of the middle lobe an irregular patch of softening was observed. The brain was carefully placed in spirit and sent to Calcutta,
but it arrived in a putrid state. The left lung was hepatized,
160—This is a most interesting case. On the 12th June he was admitted into hospital with diarrhœa. On the afternoon of the 13th fever came
on, which did not leave him till he died. On the 14th the lowest temperature was 103° 8', on the 15th 103° 4', on the 16th at 5 A. M. 103o2' was
recorded, at 3 P. M. 104° 4'. On the 17th the temperature fell to 101° 2' and from that hour it steadily decreased until he died. On the 18th it was 96°4
in the axilla.
No tubercular disease was found. The lungs were slightly congested, and the bronchial tubes contained frothy mucus. Throughout the ilium
Peyers glands were all enlarged, their edges being raised and swollen. Their surfaces were honey-combed and covered with an ashy colored deposit,
Incipient ulceration was observed in a few of the glands. The solitary glands were hypertrophied. The spleen was much enlarged, and weighed 1lb
2 ounces.
