Memorandum on the statistics of the Bengal insane asylums of the 10 years 1863—72.

1. THE following tabular statements exhibit the statistics of the lunatic asylums of
Bengal proper for the 10 years 1863 to 1872. The statements are absolutely correct, so far
as the information upon which they have been based may be relied upon; but as there is
room for doubt in this respect, the figures are not so reliable as they otherwise would be,
yet for purposes of comparison they may be found useful and interesting.

2. Table No. 1 exhibits the principal facts regarding the population of the Bengal
asylums for the 10 years—the number of inmates remaining under treatment at the
beginning of each year, the admissions and re-admissions, the total treated, the number
discharged, and the circumstances under which they left the asylums; the number remaining
at the close of each year, the daily average strength, and the daily average sick.
