he 10 years.

3. An abstract of the above table, in the form of a gain and loss statement, would read
thus:—

Of the 4,449 patients treated during the 10 years, 41.07 per cent. were discharged cured,
10.65 improved, 2.74 otherwise (mostly escapes), 23.69 died, and 21.85 remained under treat-
ment on the 31st December 1872.

4. Table No. II shows the principal events in ratio to population, and admits of a
ready comparison of the results of one year with those of another.

Population.

5. Population.—Judging from table No. I, it is evident that the asylum population is a
rapidly increasing one ; its growth year by year is very marked. Taking the census on the
1st January 1863, and comparing it with that on the 31st December 1872, it will be seen
that during the 10 years under report the population has increased 90.9 per cent. The
daily average strength has increased 71.3 per cent., the admissions and re-admissions 101.1
per cent., and the total treated 75.6 per cent. Thus we find that, during the short space
of 10 years, judging from the first of the above ratios, the asylum population has
all but doubled itself. The rate of increase has been on an average about 56 per annum.

Capacity of the
asylums.

It may here be interesting to show the capacity of each of the Bengal asylums,
calculated at the rate of 50 superficial feet per inmate together with the number in
confinement in each on the 31st December 1872:—

The above statement very clearly sets forth the extent to which each asylum was over-
crowded on the 31st December 1872. The population of the asylums was 52 per cent. in
excess of the existing accommodation.
