As in the previous years special efforts were made with the
help of the Magistrates and Police throughout the year under
report to discharge incurable harmless insane patients to the care
of their relatives, as a result of which 8 patients were discharged.
No trace of any friend or relative could be found in 7 cases
in spite of vigorous enquiries instituted by the Magistrates con-
cerned. In 8 cases the plea of inability on economic grounds
to take charge of the patients put forward by the relatives was
accepted by the enquiring Magistrates.
5. The maximum number of patients resident in the
hospital on any one night during the year under report was 1,280
(1,051 males and 229 females) against 1,264 (1,049 males and
215 females) in the previous year,
6. Total admissions.—The admissions (including re-admis-
sions) during the year under report were 132 (97 males and
35 females) against 99 (63 males and 36 females) in 1930 and
93 (64 males and 29 females) in 1929.
7. Re-admissions.—Ten patients were re-admitted (6 males
and 4 females) during the year under report, against 1 male in
1930 and 7 (5 males and 2 females) in 1929.
Of the above 10 patients, 2 were criminal insanes and
were re-admitted after trial and 8 were non-criminal patients of
the Manic Depressive Psychosis type.
8. Total population.—The total population of the hospital
during the year under report was 1,388 (1,131 males and 257
females) against 1,363 (1,112 males and 251 females) in 1930 and
1,367 (1,129 males and 238 females) in 1929.
9. Daily average strength.—The daily average strength of
the hospital during the year under report was 1259.41 (1033.34
males and 226.07 females) as compared with 1258.13 (1040.05
males and 218.08 females) in 1930 and 1257.12 (1048.31 males
and 208.81 females) in 1929.
10. (a) The ratio per cent of cases cured to the daily average
strength was 4.53 (4.16 males and 6.19 females) in 1931 as
compared with 4.69 (3.94 males and 8.71 females) in 1930 and
3.89 (3.24 males and 7.18 females) in 1929.
(b) The ratio per cent of cases cured to the total admission
during the year under report was 14.39 (13.40 males and 17.14
females) as compared with 24.24 (23.49 males and 22.22 females)
in 1930 and 18.60 (16.94 males and 22.22 females) in 1929.
