19. Europeans and Eurasians.—There were no admissions of this class
during the year. Of the 5 males remaining at the close of last year, one was handed
over to his friends, one was discharged cured, leaving three still in the Asylum.
Three females remained from last year, of whom one was transferred to Madras
Lunatic Asylum and one discharged cured, leaving one still under detention.
There has been no improvement in the accommodation for females. The subject
was brought to the notice of the Asylum Committee, but in view of the small
numbers of this class it was determined to take no action at present.

The following statement gives details as to Europeans and Eurasians : —

20.     Statements III, IV and V are submitted, but call for no remark.

21.     Statements VI and VII.—There have been considerably fewer reco-
veries than in 1897, but no reason can be given for this.

As shown in column 15 of Statement VII the cause of insanity was unknown
in 58 out of 88 admissions. The proportion is rather less than in the last year.

22.     Statement VIII, showing the return of sick.—There were 19 cases of
chicken-pox, 17 of influenza and one of cholera during the year. The percentage
of admissions rose to 50 as compared with 42 in 1897. The chief increases were
under chicken-pox (12), influenza (17), dysentery (10), mania (5), abscess (7).
There has been a decrease under the headings diarrhœa (9) and debility (3).

Many of the patients admitted were in very bad health. Greater care has
been taken to formally admit to hospital all cases requiring medical treatment and
this has somewhat increased the total of admissions.

The following table gives the number of admissions to hospital and deaths
during the past three years :—
