SIR.

I have the honour to submit herewith the Annual Report
on the Mental Hospitals at Tadagale and Minbu for the year 1939.

Accommodation.

2. The accommodation in the two Mental Hospitals remained the
same as in the previous year, viz. 1,047 (882
males, and 165 females) at Tadagale and 139
males at Minbu, or a total of 1,186 (1,021 males and 165 females) at
both institutions. There was no overcrowding either at the Mental
Hospital, Tadagale or at Minbu.

Statements I and II.

3. At Tadagale the year commenced with a population of 769
patients (648 males and 121 females) and ended
with 729 (610 males and 119 females). The
daily average population was 779, the maximum number confined on
any one night being 807 (684 males and 123 females). At Minbu the
number of patients was increased from 116 to 139 by the transfer of
22 criminal lunatics from Tadagale and 1 re-admission. The number
remaining at the end of the year was 134. The daily average
population at Minbu was 120.

Statements I and II.

4. Admission and Discharges.—At Tadagale the total number of
patients admitted during the year was 331
(281 males and 50 females) as compared with
309 (254 males and 55 females) whilst at Minbu the new admissions
comprised 22 patients transferred from Tadagale and 1 re-admission.
The small increase in the number of admissions is normal and therefore
