Vaccination in the city of
Amritsar.

10. Vaccinations were performed in the city of Amritsar by Hukeem
"Motee Ram," during the entire year. Dr. McRae,
Deputy Inspector General of Hospitals, and Dr. Hender-
son, Civil Surgeon of Amritsar, inspected several of these cases in the month
of July, and pronounced the vesicles to be excellent. I tried to do the same
in a few places, but did not consider the results so successful as to warrant my
continuing the practice. 1,020 operations were performed in the city of
Amritsar, of which 810 were successful. " Motee Ram" was employed under
the Hukeem system in Amritsar, but was discharged for misconduct. He has,
however, since then continued vaccinations in the city.

11. In the year 1866, inoculation for small-pox was practiced in
" Kanawar," a part of the district of "Bisahir," situated under the snowy
range north-east of Simla. The disease spread, and a great many people
died in consequence.

Vaccinations introdneed
into Thibet by Mr. Pagell,
Missionary.

I sent vaccinators there, and also gave vaccine to Mr. Pagell, a Mis-
sionary, who resides in those parts. I had previously
given Mr. Pagell instructions in vaccination. On the
outbreak of small-pox in " Kanawar," I begged Mr.
Pagell to use his influence in getting the people vaccinated both there and if
possible beyond the frontier. He has since informed me that his efforts have
been successful, and that in Thibet he has vaccinated about 700 people.
Mr. Pagell is sanguine of being able to carry on operations in Thibet next
hot weather.

12. Appended to this Report are numerical returns of operations per-
formed during the year.

                    VACCINATION AT DISPENSARIES.

13. There is not much to be said respecting the Dispensary Vaccine
operations. As far as I can learn, the rule of keeping vaccinators within
easy reach of Civil Surgeons is more strictly kept.

Abbottabad.

About Abbottabad and in the Huzara District, there was a good deal
of small-pox during the latter.half of the year, originat-
ing from inoculations having been freely practised there.
The disease spread from thence into the Rawulpindi District.

Bunnoo.

In Bunnoo ' inoculators' were also at work. Dr. Ross, the Civi
Surgeon, tried to put a stop to it, and is in hopes that
he has persuaded an inoculator to give up his old prac
tice and take to vaccination instead.

Dera Ismael Khan.

Success among the Po-
windas.

In the Dera Ismael Khan District, Dr. Courtney was very successful
in introducing vaccination among the Powinrequested him to employ one, and das. He
vaccinated a large number of them at the Dispensary
and several hundreds at their encampments. He states that they appear fully
alive to the advantages of vaccination. He feels the
want of a Pushtoo-speaking vaccinator to work among
them, and I have requested him to employ one, and if possible a Powinda.
Dr. Courtney is deserving of praise for his successful efforts.
