Expenditure on vaccination in the Uni-
ted Provinces comparatively low.

13. It will be seen from the above table that, taking into account the im-
portance and population of the United Provinces,
and the extent of operations, covering during the
past season, a total of 1,181,600 successful primary
vaccinations, the actual cost of the department is much less than in other provinces
and in the Chief Commissionerships with one exception that of Bengal, where a system
which minimises public expenditure of employing licensed vaccinators is in force.

General operations.

14. The total number of persons vaccinated was 1,365,373 as compared with
1,112,117 in the previous season, and the successful
primary operations numbered 1,181,600 against
945,364. There were besides, 25,662 re-vaccinations of which 58.95 per cent. were suc-
cessful. The average number of persons vaccinated by each vaccinator was 1,610, as
compared with 1,349 in 1892-93; and the percentage of primary successful cases in
which the results were known, rose from 92.43 to 93.13, and in re-vaccination from
56.50 to 58 95. A total of 25.38 persons per 1,000 of the population were success-
fully vaccinated as compared with 20.34 in the previous year. The results therefore
of the general operations, during the season 1893-94 were very satisfactory as the
progressive increase of previous years was more than maintained, and the percentage
of success rose concurrently with the wide extention of vaccination. The increase in the
annual number of successful primary operations during the past 5 years, that is since
1888-89, has been very marked; and the number of successful operations has risen
from 659,191 in that year, to 1,181,600 in 1893-94, or an increase of 79 per cent. in
the annual number of successful primary vaccinations.

Relative number of successful primary
vaccinations, and of deaths from small-
pox for a series of years,

15. The following table shows the number of successful primary vaccinations,
and the number of deaths from small-pox in each
district of the United Provinces for a serious of 11
years:—
