gives the yearly output, extension of the areas where arm-to-arm vaccination has
been replaced by calf lymph vaccination, expenditure and income, but it has been
much hampered by the difficulty of obtaining a sufficient supply of suitable calves.
This year however arrangements have been made by which it is hoped this
difficulty will, to a great extent, disappear, and the complete replacement of
arm-to-arm, by calf lymph, vaccination in all the districts be made possible in the
near future.

From 1st April 1910 lymph was supplied, under the orders of Government,
for district use and also to the Military Department, on payment, as in the case of
municipalities and native states, instead of free as formerly, the prices charged
being half the usual rates in the case of the former and full rates in the case of the
latter. This has resulted in a large increase of income to the depôt, so that it is
now being worked at a slight profit instead of a loss. In 1910-11 the income was
Rs. 14,211—Rs. 13,910 from sale of lymph and Rs. 301 from that of milk, &c.—
against Rs. 8,527 in 1909-10 and Rs. 8,572 in 1908-9, while the expenditure
amounted to Rs. 12,097 during 1910-11 as compared with Rs. 10,524 in 1909-10 and
Rs. 12,573 in 1908-9.

All the 87 municipalities and 37 out of the 44 notified areas in these provinces
received their supplies of lymph, on payment, from the depôt during 1910-11 as
against 87 and 32, respectively, in 1909-10 and 79 and 19 in 1908-9. In 13
districts also (Dehra Dun, Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Agra, Moradabad,
Shahjahanpur, Pilibhit, Naini Tal, Lucknow, Rae Bareli, Sitapur and Partabgarh)
arm-to-arm vaccination has now been done away with and vaccination is carried on
with pure glycerinated calf lymph supplied from the depôt as against 8 in 1909-10
and 4 in 1908-9. With the new arrangements referred to above a further extension
of this practice will be possible, and it is proposed to add 9 new districts during
next season.

A number of native states and the Chief Medical Officer, East Indian
Railway, Allahabad, also purchased lymph to the value of Rs. 1,055 in 1910-11 as
against Rs. 1,648 in 1909-10 and Rs. 1,613 in 1908-9. This decrease in output
during 1910-11 was chiefly due to the fact that the states in Bundelkhand wished
to obtain their supplies at very reduced rates and it was not considered advisable to
comply in view of the fact that we can easily dispose, in these provinces, of all the
lymph manufactured.

Two hundred and four calves (including 19 left over from the previous year)
were received in the depôt during 1910-11. Of these, 180 calves—108 cow and 72
buffalo—were vaccinated (against 125 and 120 in the preceding two years
respectively), 13 died unvaccinated, 2 died while under vaccination and 9 were left
unvaccinated at the close of the year. Out of the 180 calves, 175 (106 cow and
69 buffalo) proved successful against 111 and 104, respectively, in 1909-10 and
1908-9.

The total quantity of crude lymph obtained during 1910-11 was 5,983.9
grammes as against 5,157.6 and 3,595.8 grammes in the preceding two years—the
average yield per cow calf being 30 grammes and that per buffalo calf 42.5
grammes in 1910-11 as compared with 33.2 and 66.4 grammes in 1909-10 and 25.0
and 57.2 grammes in 1908-9. This shows a decrease in lymph obtained per calf
in 1910-11 as against the previous year, which is due to the facts that (1) all
