                              VACCINATION

                                    IN THE

NORTH-WEST FRONTIER PROVINCE DURING
                        THE YEAR 1922-23.

Administration.

1. The charge of the Vaccination Department was held
by me throughout the year, The post
of Assistant Director of Public Health
was held by Lieutenant-Colonel J. Husband, I. M. S., from
11th January to 11th September and by Lieutenant-Colonel
H. G. Stiles-Webb, I. M. S., for the rest of the year.

2. The appointments of two divisional inspectors of
vaccination were abolished in April, in
connection with retrenchment necessitat-
ed by financial stringency, The inspecting staff consisted
of six Superintendents, one of whom was posted in each of the
settled districts and one in Mardan. Thirty-five vaccinators
were employed, of whom 29 worked in the settled districts
and six in the agencies. In addition two sub-assistant
Surgeons in military employ carried out vaccination in the
Peshawar and Nowshera cantonments and certain sub-
Assistant Surgeons in charge of outlying dispensaries in
Mardan, Kohat and Wano also performed some vaccina-
tions.

3. The total number of operations performed in the
settled districts and agencies during the
year was 144,155 compared with100,219
in the preceding year. This increase of 43,936 is most satisfac-
tory, and is mainly attributable to the work done in the Hazara,
and the Dera Ismail Khan districts and the Kurram Valley.
Last year, however, owing to the prevalence of malaria and
cholera the number of vaccinations carried out was below the
average. A table is therefore appended comparing the work
done in the year under review with that of the annual average
