                                                 Jails.

97.  Ajmer.—The daily average number of prisoners in the Ajmer Jail was
344.58 against 351.46 in the previous year.

98.   The total number of admissions into Hospital and the daily average number
of sick during the year were 71 and 2.40 against 91 and 2.27 in the preceding year.

99.   There were three deaths among the Convicts and two among the under-
trials against nil in 1925. Of the deaths among the Convicts one was due to
Dysentery, one to Bronchitis and one to Pneumonia. Of the deaths among the
undertrials one was due to Asthma and another to Gostritis in consequence of bad
health.

100.   The Review by the Commissioner, Ajmer-Merwara on the strength,
classification, health, employment and conduct of prisoners, nature of sentences,
Jail manufactures and expenditure of the Jail is given as Appendix A of the Report
together with statements.

                                          Indian States.

101.   The number of prisoners in the Jails in the Indian States fell from 4,909.20
in 1925 to 4,848.91 in 1926, the number of admissions into Hospitals from 5,203 to
2,752, the daily average number of sick from 156.06 to 102.41 ; but the mortality
rose from 72 to 109 and the ratio of death per mille of average strength from 14.66
to 22.48.

102.   There were no deaths in the Jails at Kishengarh, Karauli, Tonk, Shah-
pura, Jhalrapatan and Partabgarh.

103.  Jaipur.—The District Jail was amalgamated with the Central Jail in the
last quarter of 1925.

The daily average number of prisoners in the Central Jail rose from 536.33
in 1925 to 829.06 in 1926, the number admitted into Hospital fell from 142 to 121,
the daily average number of sick from 8.28 to 6.36 ; but the mortality rose from 1
to 18 and the ratio of death per mille of average strength from 1.86 to 21.71.

104.  Jodhpur.—In the Jodhpur Central Jail the average number of prisoners
was 721.88 against 617.24 in 1925. The number of In-patients admitted into
Hospital was 174 as compared with 112 in the previous year. The number of
deaths was 9 against 4 in the previous year.

The death rate increased from 6.48 to 12.47.
