From the above figures it will be seen that the average percentage of success
in primary vaccination is 0.5 less than in my previous report. As directions
have now been given to enter a child's name in the vaccinators' registers as
often as it is vaccinated the percentages next year will be lower. Hitherto
the vaccinators did not enter the result in cases of failure until the child was
vaccinated twice, so our failures were very few. This new method of
registering will make the vaccinators vaccinate with more care, to avoid
having many unsuccessful on the first operation, but in point of fact the
resulting percentage will not be as correct as that which we have hitherto
shown.

Sex.

45. There is no record of the sex, caste and age of persons re-vacci-
nated, but of the 489,024 primary vaccinations in
Civil life, as shown in Statements Nos. I. and V.,
260,991 were males and 228,033 were females. This gives a percentage of
53.37 males and 46.63 females. The males were 0.3 more in 1869-70. The
disparity in the number of the sexes is, I think, greater than it can possibly
be in the general population. The Superintendents are giving their attention
to the columns for the sexes, and I have no doubt that we will shortly have
a less disparity than has hitherto been displayed in our returns.

Caste.

46. The following are the percentages of castes in primary vaccina-
tions : Christians 0.5 ; Hindoos 74.9 ; Mussalmans
18.7 ; Parsees 0.2; and other castes 5.6. These
percentages are almost the same as in 1869-70.
