20                                  VACCINATION REPORT,

In the Southern Registration District, Dr. Channer, the Deputy Sanitary
Commissioner, gave lectures and practical demonstrations in animal vaccination
to the several Inspectors of Sanitation and Vaccination and vaccinators during
rains.

Small-pox by Collectorates.

Small-pox appeared during the year in every district in the Presidency except in
the Upper Sind Frontier. Bombay City is very liable to have the disease im-
ported, but the efficiency of the vaccination work prevents any widespread
effects.

Progress in the Western
Registration District.

52. The Western Registration District extends over an area of 24,546
square miles, comprising the Collectorates of Khándesh,
Násik, Thána and Kolába, and the Native States of
Jawhár, Janjira, Dángs and Surgána. It has a popu-
lation of 3,898,814 persons. It is administered by a Deputy Sanitary Commis-
sioner, who has working under him 8 Inspectors of Sanitation and Vaccination,
2 clerks, 87 vaccinators and candidates, and 90 peons. Vaccination returns are
received from one dispensary only. Each vaccinator, on an average, worked
amongst a population of 50,629 persons. They primarily vaccinated 116,491,
and re-vaccinated 4,005 persons; in the previous year the respective figures were
113,835 and 3,927. There were 109,971 or 94.40 per cent. successful under pri-
