Out of 1,425 heifers inoculated, 1,423 were successful and 2 were unsuccess-
ful. 59 inoculated calves were rejected by the Superintendent of Vaccination,
Presidency Circle, Bombay, owing to their sickness. In Bombay City there was
cattle disease throughout the year. In February last grave fears were enter-
tained on account of the occurrence of rinderpest which carried away in
succession all the inoculated calves except one, and all hopes were centred in
this one which, if it had gone bad, would have been very serious, for just at this
time small-pox began and there was not at first enough lymph to meet the
demand for vaccination which soon arose as the epidemic gained strength. The
Superintendent and his staff, however, carefully increased the supply and were
after a time able to meet every demand. The large increase in revaccinations
shows the work done, for which great credit is due to Dr. Kantak, the Super-
intendent, and his staff.
