technically successful. The registers in about 1,450 villages were also tested by
the five Deputy Sanitary Commissioners and 42,707 out of the 75,171 children
entered as vaccinated were discovered by them. Of these, 1,058 or 2.47 per
cent. were found to have been unsuccessfully and 9,033 badly vaccinated. The
large number of absentees—32,368—is said to have been accounted for.

5.     The report is, as usual, interesting, but may be made shorter, and
perhaps more valuable, by omitting from the text mere repetitions of figures
which already appear clearly in the statistical tables incorporated in the various
paragraphs, and by substituting, where necessary, such comments as would
elucidate or explain the facts implied. Paragraphs 23, 26 and 30 are instances
in point. The report is also disfigured by many printer's errors, the most
important of which is the substitution of " 82,616 " for " 32,616 " in the table
in paragraph 48.

6.    It is satisfactory to observe that the Sanitary Commissioner makes
favourable mention of the manner in which Surgeon-Majors Channer, Street and
Anderson, and Surgeon-Captains Dyson and Arnim, and Assistant Surgeon
S. V. Kantak discharged their various duties, and of the tact and energy displayed
by them. His Excellency in Council regrets the loss sustained by the public
service in the retirement of Mr. Trimbak Anant, First Class Inspector, after a
meritorious service of more than 42 years.
