Reasons of decrease.

5. The decrease is chiefly distributed in the Presi-
dency Circle, Bombay, and in the Sind Registration
District.

6.    In the City of Bombay the decrease was due chiefly to the occurrence of
the plague which prevailed during the second half of the year.

7.    In the Sind Registration District, the decrease is thus accounted for by
the Deputy Sanitary Commissioner :—

" During the early part of the year the progress of the work was much interfered with by
the heavy rains and the floods which followed them; in many tálukas the roads were impassable
for a considerable period, resulting in loss of lymph and delay of the work. On the subsiding of
the floods, work progressed until again interrupted by the appearance of plague in the Province."

Infants successfully vacci-
nated as compared with avail-
able number.

8. The following table shows the number of infants successfully vaccinated
in the Presidency exclusive of Native States. The
birth and death statistics are taken for the calendar
year, as usual, in calculating the number available for
vaccination, because infants are generally not vaccina-
ted until three months after birth :—

The above table shows that the successfully vaccinated fell short of the
registered births, minus deaths amongst those under one year old. Out of
569,421 infants available for vaccination under one year, 450,996 or 79.20 per
cent. have been protected.

Results in primary vacci-
nation.

9. Out of 736,511 persons primarily vaccinated, 680,033 or 92.33 per cent.
were successful. The number of unsuccessful cases
was 11,243. In 46,627 cases the result was unknown,
as the children were not again brought for inspection,
1,392 persons were operated on a second time on account of the failure of the first
operation. The percentage of success excluding "unknown " cases was 98.37.

Results in revaccination.

10. During the year, 74,212 persons were revaccinated. The number of suc-
cessful cases was 43,598 or 58.75 per cent. In 18,218
instances the result could not be ascertained and in
12,419 the operation failed, whilst in 23 cases the revaccination was repeated.

The percentage of success excluding " unknown cases " was 77.83.

cluding " unknown cases."

cination contrasted with those for the previous year :—
