NOTES ON VACCINATION

                                             IN THE

                               BOMBAY PRESIDENCY

                                        FOR 1897-98.

Brief Report.

In accordance with Government Resolution in the General Department,
No. 2426 of 17th August 1887, the report on vaccina-
tion for 1897-98 consists of brief notes and the usual
statements.

Vaccination in Native States.

2. By Government Resolutions in the General Department, Nos. 2803 and
4762, dated respectively 27th July and 18th December
1894, the vaccination statistics of the following Native
States are shown separately in Appendix II:—

Baroda.

Káthiáwár.

Cutch.

Pálanpur.

I'dar.

3. By Government Resolution in the Political Department, No. 4516, dated
19th July 1897, the Phaltan State, in the Sátára District, is permitted to main-
tain a complete vaccination organization of its own. The vaccination statistics
of this State for the year under report, however, have been included in this
report, but in future will be shown separately.

Changes amongst the Super-
vising officers.

4. The changes amongst the Supervising officers,
which took place during 1897-98, were as follows : —

(a) In the Western Registration District, Surgeon-Major A. V. An-
derson, the permanent incumbent, was in charge of the District from the
beginning of the year to the end of September 1897. Surgeon-Major
C. G. W. Lowdell held charge from 1st October to 24th February
1898 and Dr. E. Maynard was in charge of the District from February
to the end of the year, during the absence of the permanent incumbent on
Plague duty.

(b) In the Central Registration District, Surgeon-Captain J. Lloyd
T. Jones, M.B., D.P.H., acted as Deputy Sanitary Commissioner up to 12th
July 1897, on which date Surgeon-Lieutenant-Colonel A. W. F. Street,
D.S.O., the permanent officer, took over charge of the office.

(c) In the Southern Registration District, Surgeon-Lieutenan Colonel
O. H. Channer obtained one year's furlough, and his duties were carried on
by Brigade-Surgeon-Lieutenant-Colonel C. T. Peters, M.B., Civil Surgeon,
Belgaum, from 6th November 1897.

(d) In the Gujarát Registration District, from 7th August to 14th
October 1897, Surgeon-Major K. S. Nariman, Civil Surgeon, Surat, acted as
Deputy Sanitary Commissioner vice Surgeon-Captain T. E. Dyson, trans-
ferred to Bombay. .

(e) In the Sind Registration District, from 13th October 1897 to 14th
January 1898, Surgeon-Lieutenant-Colonel J. McCloghry, F.R.C.S., Civil
Surgeon, Karáchi, acted as Deputy Sanitary Commissioner vice Surgeon-
Captain H. C. L. Arnim, I. M. S., on privilege leave. And again from
16th February 1898 to the end of the official year the same officer acted
as Deputy Sanitary Commissioner, Sind, vice Surgeon-Captain H. C. L.
Arnim, I.M.S., transferred to Bombay for Plague duty.
