7. The total number of persons primarily vaccinated including those in
Native States, therefore, amounted to 809,294 and the total of re-vaccinations
to 107,806 against 749,553 and 99,362 in 1921-22.

The Assistant Director of Public Health visited Surat while the small-pox
epidemic was in progress in April 1922 and made an inspection of the affected
localities, a house to house vaccination campaign being organised. The
Municipality engaged an extra vaccinator for this purpose. The outbreak
which commenced in February 1922 ceased in July of the same year.

In 1922-23, 4,390 pilgrims proceeding to Hedjaz were re-vaccinated in
Karachi town at a cost of Rs. 702-4-0 against Rs. 736-14-9 in the previous year.
A single pilgrim was primarily vaccinated.

In Guzerat a scheme for conducting a special vaccination campaign

8. The installation of electric road lights commenced last year has been
completed. Seven additional lights in the main
buildings have been sanctioned as well as additional
lights in the residential quarters of the staff.
Minor additions and repairs to the machinery were also carried out.

The Institute has for some time been dependent on a single machine for
its cold storage plant and the Electrical Engineer to Government recommended
the provision of a second machine to guard against undesirable variations in the
temperature of the cold store. The proposal has been approved by Government,
a sum of Rs. 14,988 being provided to defray cost. The work of installing the
plant has been taken in hand.

The drainage system of the Institute continued to work well. There was
a shortage of water for about 10 days at the end of June 1922 and
water carts had to be engaged temporarily to supplement the supply. The
new well which was brought into use last year has not come upto expectations
and failed to furnish the requisite amount of water during the hot season.

The quality of vesiculation on the calves was again satisfactory. The
practice of passing lymph strains through rabbits continues to maintain the
potency of seed lymph at a high level. Seed lymphs were supplied to
Pandukotah State and Hyderabad Deccan.

During the year 1922-1923, 1,172,800 doses of lymph were issued from
the Belgaum Vaccine Institute showing an increase of 36,480 as compared with
the previous year. The details of issues for the last three years are as follows :—
