believe in it, but as there are still many more children born who live beyond
the time they should be vaccinated, I think that it shows that it is still neces-
sary for the people to have impressed on them the benefit of vaccination. In
some places in the Basim and Wun districts, the villages are small and scattered
over large areas, so that it is not easy for the staff in them to overcome more
work. Besides, in the Basim district, the Superintendent was not energetic:
one Vaccinator was dismissed, two reduced, and several fined for laziness.
The Assistant Commissioner and Tahsildar of Poosud have done their best to
extend the benefits of vaccination. The same may be said of the district officers
of Wun; and Captain Mackenzie, the Deputy Commissioner, has even gone so
far as to examine the work done in some places, but so many people were
vaccinated in this district in the previous two years, and the villages are so
small and so far apart from each other, that more could not have been expect-
ed than was done, especially as many of the Vaccinators were ill during the
season.

In the Oomraottee district two Vaccinators were dismissed, but this alone
cannot account for the small increase of work done, as many children are yet
unprotected in it.

Caste of people vaccinated.

18. The castes of the people vaccinated in
the two years are as follows :—

And it is satisfactory to observe that there is an increase under all headings.
But I should like to see more Mahomedans vaccinated, as in many places they
throw obstacles in the way, and their want of example prevents others from
bringing their children forward. The Rajpoots are also great obstructers to
vaccination, and indeed curious to say, considering the number there are in the
province from the Bombay presidency, where vaccination is not new to the
people. I may add Brahmins to this list.

Proportion of infants vaccinated.

19. The proportion of infants vaccinated has
increased, i. e., from 31 per cent. in 1873-74 to 38
per cent. in the year under report.

Number of verifications compared
with the previous year.

20. As I have previously, more than once,
adverted to the importance of " verification" of
work done, and of good work, I produce the fol-
lowing statement:—

No. of scars shown by Superintendents in cases verified.
