of Dr. King's discovery. A systematic experiment was accordingly undertaken,
the results of which, given in detail in the appendix, conclusively prove the
practical value of the lanoline-vaccine paste; and I am of opinion that, given a
sufficient supply of calves (cow or buffalo), a depôt for the manufacture of the
paste in each province could supply all the lymph required in India.

The lymph-paste is obtained by a modification of the German method of
lymph collection, which is briefly as follows :—

The calf having been duly prepared, from 50 to 100 scarifications about an
inch in length are made with a scalpel or needle scarificator. Animal or hu-
manized lymph is then well rubbed in, all oozing from the scarified surfaces having
first been removed by means of a soft dry cloth.

On the evening of the 5th day (5×24 hours) or morning of the 6th day the
vesicles are fully developed, when, after having been thoroughly cleaned, the whole
of the vesicle including lymph and dermal tissue is scraped off, collected in a
glass mortar, weighed, reduced to pulp, and intimately mixed with five parts by
weight of lanoline and sent out for use in small pots.

The vaccinator uses the paste exactly in the same way as he would lymph.
The instrument in use in this province is a needle scarificator, manufactured
locally, with which three cross scarifications are made on one arm and the paste
well rubbed in. The cicatrices resulting from any two of these scarifications
represent a surface of half a square inch and ensure perfect protection against
small-pox.

In the calf, the abraided surface dries up in a few days, up to which time it
should remain in the depôt, and the scarified surfaces kept clean and dressed
with boracic acid lotion.

Assistant Surgeon Surrendrenath Barat was deputed by the Chief Commis-
sioner of the Central Provinces to acquaint himself with the method of animal
vaccination as practised in Berar.

This officer reported his arrival in Amraoti on the 17th November and
attended the experiment up to the 28th idem, when he reported that he was in
a position to start the work in the Central Provinces.

In conclusion I would bring specially to the notice of the Resident the ser-
vices rendered by my Head Clerk, Mr. A. George, in supervising this experiment.
Owing to my other duties I was only occasionally able to run in by rail during the
two months the experiment was being carried on, and throughout this period Mr.
George gave his constant and willing aid in supervising the work in addition to
his legitimate duties and exhibited an intelligent and lively interest in the
experiment, for which my acknowledgments are due.

Superintendent Bapurao Yadava, who was responsible for the executive
part of the work, performed his duties with care and skill, and is also deserving
of commendation.

                                                                              Sir,

                                                            Your most obedient servant,
