It will be seen from the table that there is an increase in the mortality
from small-pox compared with the previous year. This was mostly in the
Wun and Basim districts, where large numbers of unprotected people came in
from the Hyderabad State.

The diagram demonstrates very clearly the protection afforded by vacci-
nation, and bears evidence of the efficiency of the work done.

Vaccination work in Berar com-
pared with other provinces.

with other provinces is given in the following

It will be seen from the table that Berar does not come out at all badly
when compared with other provinces considering the difficulties that had to be
contended with. Other provinces, with the exception of Bombay and the
Central Provinces, had no famine to speak of in 1899, and I have no doubt
that in the two afflicted provinces vaccination in 1900-01 will be shown to
have been affected (this year by the famine of 1900) as has been the case in
Berar.

Inspections.

14. The following table gives particulars of the inspection work done by
Superintendents, and shows that 50.7 per cent.
of the total primary vaccination were verified as
compared with 50.3 in the previous year. The percentage ranged from 41.5
in the Akola district to 59.1 in the Wun district. Inspection of re-vaccination
was low owing to the fluctuating population on relief works, where most of the
re-vaccination was done ;—

Vaccination work in municipalities.

15. The following table shows the work done within the limits of munici-
palities during the year under report, and it will
be seen that, except in the case of three munici-
