26.    Provincial.—Civil Surgeons were 801 days on tour. They inspected
6,140 villages and saw 59,240 children, of whom 54,323 had been successfully
vaccinated. In the previous season they spent 37 days less on tour, but visited
788 more villages and saw 9,782 more children. In the Nagpur and Jubbulpore
Districts, Assistant Surgeons relieve the Civil Surgeons of inspection work. There
has been a large falling off in the interval of inspections made by the Assistant
Surgeon at Jubbulpore, due to his withdrawal for plague duty. Several Civil
Surgeons had to limit their vaccination inspections, as their attention was especial-
ly required in connection with famine duty.

27.    Native Superintendents were 3,158 days on tour, visited 14,761 villages
and saw 161,516 children, of whom 149,861 had been successfully vaccinated.
The Native Superintendent of Balaghat did very little inspection work. He
spent 73 days on tour as compared with 125 days in the previous year.

28.    Feudatory States.—The inspection of vaccination in these States is not
satisfactory; but when the seasons are more favourable, Civil Surgeons may be able
to prolong their tours and extend vaccination in the Native States adjoining their
districts.

29.    Lymph.—Great progress has been made in these Provinces in the
matter of substituting animal for human lymph. In many districts " Lanoline
lymph " is used effectively. Arm-to-arm vaccination is now practised in very few
places. Nine thousand eight hundred and forty-four calves were vaccinated, of
which number 711 were unsuccessfully operated on and 209 were rejected on
account of suppuration or excessive inflammation of the vesicles.

Calves are procured in many places gratis. The total cost of maintaining and
supplying calf lymph was Rs. 211 -0-9.

Two hundred and forty thousand two hundred and seventeen children were
vaccinated with calf lymph, of which 225,271 were declared successful.
