Inspection of operations in
the Khalsa.

31. Civil Surgeons were 503 days on tour. They inspected 5,226 villages
and saw 63,406 children, of whom 58,506 were found to
have been successfully vaccinated. In the previous season,
they spent 205 days more on tour, visited 1,603 more villages and saw 5,912
more children.

32.    The decrease in the inspection work done by Civil Surgeons has
already been explained in paragraph 24 above.

33.    No Assistant Surgeon could be made available specially for inspection
duty in the Nagpur District. The work here was carried out by the Inspecting
Medical Officer of Famine Relief Camps (an Assistant Surgeon) in addition to
his regular duties. In the Jubbulpore District, the inspections were carried out
by the Civil Surgeon himself.

34.     Native Superintendents were 2,705 days on tour, visited 15,715
villages and saw 201,975 children, of whom 191,928 had been successfully vaccin-
ated. In the previous year, they were 3,211 days on tour, inspected 17,806
villages and saw 190,333 children, of whom 174,264 had been successfully vaccin-
ated. The falling off in the number of days on which the Native Superinten-
dents were on tour, was due to the above class of officers having been employed
for a considerable period on duties connected with famine relief camps, and thus
more time could not be spared by them for the performance of their regular
duties.

35.    The percentage of success as verified by Civil Surgeons was 92.27: by
Native Superintendents 95.02 : and as returned by Vaccinators 96.65.

36.    On the whole, inspection work was performed in a satisfactory manner.

37.     Civil Surgeons saw 15.99 per cent. of the total number vaccinated: and
Native Superintendents 50.95 per cent.

Inspection of operations in
Feudatory States.

38. In the Feudatory States, inspection work was less than in the previous
year, due mainly to no inspection work having been done
in the Kawardha, Rerakhole and Sarangarh States,
owing to the employment of some of the Native Superintendents on famine duty,
and to no return having been received from the Sakti State.

Calf vaccination number of
calves operated on

39. During the season, 9,842 calves were operated on and the lymph from
8,840 was taken into use. With this lymph, 276,137
children were vaccinated, 264,099 cases being returned
as successful, as compared with 254,561 in the previous year. The total cost
incurred in the cultivation of this lymph was Rs. 97-13-0, against Rs. 238-9-6
in the previous year.
