TRIENNIAL REPORT ON VACCINATION

                                          IN THE

        CENTRAL PROVINCES AND BERAR

            FOR THE YEARS 1908-09, 1900-10 AND 1910-11.

Cause of the delay in sub-
mitting the report.

The 30 days delay in the submission of the report to the Press is owing
to late receipt of some of the District statements and
to unusual press of work in my office.

Population and area in which
vaccination work was per-
formed.

2. During the triennium the lower taluks of Sironcha in Chanda District
covering an area of 539 square miles with a population
of 20,218 inhabitants were transferred to the Madras
Presidency. The area now served by the Department is
131,025 square miles, with a population of 13,601,341, as against 131,564 square
miles and a population of 13,621,559 in the previous triennium.

Vaccination Establishment.

3. At the close of the last triennium there were 29 Assistant Superin-
tendents (25 in the Khalsa and 4 in the Feudatory States)
and 314 Vaccinators and paid apprentices (279 in the

Khalsa and 35 in the Feudatory States). The number of Assistant Superintend-
ents continued unaltered until December 1910, when 6 new appointments were
created (2 each in Raipur and Bilaspur and 1 each in Nagpur and Chanda).
With regard to Vaccinators, 2 new appointments were created in the Khalsa
area in 1908-09, and two more in the succeeding year, making a total of 283
Vaccinators and apprentices in the British Districts.

In the Feudatory States the number rose from 35 in 1907-08 to 51 in 1908-09,
and to 54 in the succeeding year. The reasons for this increase have been
given in the notes on vaccination for those years During the past year (1910-11),
Raigarh and Jashpur increased their staff by one each, while in Sirguja one
appointment was brought under reduction, the total number on duty at the close
of the triennium being 55.

As mentioned in the notes for the year 1909-10—Plague ; a diminished birth-
rate ; discontinuance of vaccination by Sub-Assistant Surgeons, and interference
with work owing to the large number of marriages following on a year of
sinhast, caused during that year a decrease of 30,000 in the total number of
operations performed; the year 1910-11, however, shows a marked improve-
ment in the work of the Department, so much so, that the total for the triennial
period 1908—11, is an increase of 60,601, upon that of the period 1905—08.

The inclusion of the statistics of Jashpur, Sirguja, Korea and Changba-
kar States accounts for part of the increased total.
