doing periodical inspection of schools and the Civil Surgeons
have been asked to give effect to it.

9.    Cost of department. Statement II.—The total cost of
the department rose from Rs. 1,99,973-12-8 in 1925-26 to
Rs. 2,06,470-9-10 during the year. The increase was under
the heads of pay of vaccinators, travelling allowance and con-
tingencies. The slight increase under pay of vaccinators was
due to grant of annual increments to vaccinators. The cost
of each successful case was annas 6 and pies 6 against annas 6
and pies 7 in the preceding year. Excluding the expenditure
incurred in connection with the Vaccine Institute, Nagpur,
the cost per successful case stands at annas 5 and pies 9 against
annas 5 and pies 8 in 1925-26.

10.    Supply of lymph.—Only glycerinated calf lymph pre-
pared at the Vaccine Institute was used. The supply was re-
ported to be satisfactory and the lymph good.

11.    The following is a report on the working of the Insti-
tute as submitted by the Superintendent in charge, Dr. Edibam,
M.B., B.S., Dr.P.H. (Amer.).

"204 bovine calves, four buffalo calves and six rabbits were
operated on during the year, of these four bovine calves were
rejected on account of the poor result, and two failures occur-
red.

"Up to 12th January 1927 the calves were inoculated by
linear incisions with a blunt scalpel, the incisions being one inch
apart. From 19th January 1927 under instructions from the
Director of Public Health the method adopted by him in the
Punjab was introduced. In this method the whole of the
abdominal area, and a part of the flanks was scarified by special
forkshaped scarificators. The average output of lymph by
the old method was 30.49 grammes and by the new method
77.17 grammes.

"The total yield of pulp was 8,263.43 grammes equivalent
to 37,892 c.c. lymph or 757,840 doses.

"The cost of lymph works out at 5 pies per dose against
6 pies last year and 9 pies in the previous year.

"The average purchase price per calf was Rs. 13 and
the average amount, realized when sold, was Rs. 10 in round
figures.

"Four calves, infected with piraplasmosis, were disposed
of without being operated on.

"The whole province of 22 districts, the States of Raigarh,
Sirguja and Bhopal, military bodies, railways, jails, labour
