OF THE PROVINCE OF ASSAM.                                              13

                                                  SILCHAR.

26. Cachar District.—Three vaccinators were employed in this district during the
season. Two were newly-appointed men. One vaccinator worked chiefly in the sadr station
and the neighbouring villages; two worked over defined areas, and the work was concentrated
as much as possible. Each vaccinator was supplied with a parwána: " for," the Civil
Surgeon remarks, " I find the influence of a Native, or even European, without the assist-
ance of the civil authorities is not of much avail. I made a tour with the Deputy-Com-
missioner myself, and found his influence of great assistance to me. I frequently
inspected the vaccination work, going myself from village to village."

The Civil Surgeon vaccinated 132 persons, of these 91 were successful vaccinations.
4 Hospital-Assistants vaccinated 427 persons, 368 were successful. 3 vaccinators vacci-
nated 2,737 persons, and of these 2,502 were successful. There were also 4 cases of
successful re-vaccinations, making a total of 2,965 successfully vaccinated, against a success
last year of 1,250.

Inoculation is said to be commonly practised, but on this point little reliable informa-
tion is available.

Small-pox has not prevailed to any great extent during the past two years. In 1880
the total deaths recorded from this disease were only 16, and during 1881 they were
registered as 21.

The vaccine lymph was supplied by the Superintendent of Vaccination, Calcutta. At
first the quality of the lymph supplied was not good, but further supplies furnished lymph
of a more potent and reliable nature.
