The apprentice employed in the Gáro Hills is not included in the total, as his work was merely nominal.

Classes of operators employed.

4. The figures above indicate the staff employed in vaccination during the pas
two years. It may be remembered that the same return
for 1885-86 showed 40 above that of 1884-85, which
was chiefly owing to 30 more Local Fund workers instituted in the later season. There
has been no such marked increase of any particular class this season; but there has been
a modest advance of 5 on the last total. The fewer vaccinators employed under the
Local Funds of Goálpára and Nowgong is to be regretted. Lakhimpur is still wanting
an Inspector.

Results in each district compared with last
season.

5. Here is shown the comparative results of vaccination in each district of the
Province for two years in succession. Of the four districts
which show a decrease for the current season, it is to be
observed that Goálpára is the only one that has less results both years. In the season
ending 31st March 1885, Goálpára totalled 16,691 vaccinated, whereas the total has
now dropped to 11,088. Neither in Kámrúp, Lakhimpur, or the Khási Hills is the
decrease very marked, and it has been in each instance compensated by a higher increase of
the previous season. The districts which have been most successful this year are
Nowgong, Sibságar, and Sylhet, and I would especially congratulate Assistant-Surgeon
Annoda Prosad Ghosh, Acting Civil Medical Officer, for his competence and zeal in bring-
ing up the figures of the Sibságar district within 100 of the "record" year under Mr. Atkins.
The results are most creditable to his administration. The sum of all the increases is
15,272, and of the decreases 8,330, leaving a small balance to credit of 6,942 operations in
the year. But as there were only five more operators this season than last, this small
increase shows in reality more industry than last season, the average number of operations
being as 553 to 569.
