Progress of Provincial vaccination.

5. The increase or decrease by districts of Provincial vaccination is shown in the
preceding table. The gross number has risen from 128,833
to 132,349, or an advance of 3,516 on the figures of 1886-87.
The best progress has been made in the Assam Valley districts. I regret to see so serious
a falling off in the numbers protected in the Gáro Hills. It is some years since there has
been any small-pox in those parts, and possibly indifference has crept in, but we know
really nothing of the vital statistics, and cannot say whether the people and the birth-rate
are themselves decreasing.

Vaccination according to class of operators.

6. There has hitherto been a laborious annual table compiled, showing not only the
vaccination performed at each centre, but distributed through-
out each class from Civil Surgeon to apprentice, and with
columns for primary, secondary, and successful vaccination. I do not think any
advantage, commensurate with its trouble and expense, is to be gained by repeating this
complicated table annually, and it has accordingly been withdrawn from the present
report.
