EASTERN BENGAL CIRCLE. 35
Interest taken by
local authorities.
9. Interest taken by the Deputy Magistrate of Moonsheegunge in promoting vaccina-
tions.—I am very much indebted to Baboo Kristo Chunder Sen, Deputy Magistrate in charge
of Sub-division Moonsheegunge, for the timely assistance he always rendered me by inducing
many advocates of inoculation to accept the prophylactic, and the success is mainly due to
his unwearied exertions in furthering the cause of vaccination.
Amount of work
done
10. Amount of work done.—Vaccine operations were carried on in a systematic and
progressive manner in six thannahs of this district, viz., Naraingunge, Moonsheegunge,
Sreenagor, Lallbag, Roopgunge, and Nowabgunge; the vaccinators worked in 959 villages,
and vaccinated 47,549 persons. The whole of Naraingunge and of Moonsheegunge with
the exception of a few villages here and there, three-fourths of Sreenagor, one-fourth of
Lallbog, and about one-eighth of Roopgunge and of Nowabgunge are well protected.
Number vaccinated.
Results
11. Number vaccinated.—The total number of vaccine operations performed during
the period under report, amounted to 47,568, of which 47,512 were cases of primary
vaccination, 37 of re-vaccination, and 19 of repetition; out of 47,512 primary operations
47,387 proved successful, 124 unsuccessful including those which turned doubtful, and in 1
the result could not be ascertained; out of 37 revaccinations, 11 turned successful and 26
unsuccessful including cases of modified success ; the repetition cases 19 in number proved
successful.
Percentage of suc-
cess
The percentage of successful primary operations was 99.73 and of revaccination 29.73.
Inspections.
12. Inspections.—Each batch of vaccinators was so placed as to enable me to go from
one to another without much loss of time, and I inspected the work of each vaccinator
four or five times during the vaccinating season. On each of these occasions 1 compared
the name of every person vaccinated in each village with the register, putting down the
letter (S) opposite the names of the persons inspected and the letter (A) opposite the
names of the absentees. The parents or guardians of the parties, not present, gave on being
questioned, satisfactory explanation to account for their absence. During inspection I
examined the vesicles or marks with careful eyes noting down the state of each point in
the column for remarks, and I also paid attention to the spelling of the proper names and
the way in which the registers have been kept. I have often seen names not properly
spelt and such names always led to confusion and delay. In every village after inspection
I spent one to three hours in answering those questions which were put to me by the
parents or guardians; they paid proper attention to what I said and they seemed satisfied.
The number inspected by me was not the same every day, but it differed a good deal accord-
ing to circumstances, when the villages to be inspected were densely populated and close to
one another, when the inhabitants of each village got all their children vaccinated in the
same day and came forward to show me the cases vaccinated, the number of persons inspect-
ed was the greatest and in opposite conditions the least. The maximum number which I
could inspect was 350, and the minimum number below 100, working from 7 A. M. to 4 or 5
P. M., sometimes to candle light.
I went on with my inspection in a progressive manner from one village to another till
the work done by a batch was finished, and so on.
