Beerbhoom District.—Dr. Barker reports that there is one vaccinator attached to the
dispensary, who is paid Rs. 10 a month by Government. He was mostly employed in
vaccinating within municipal limits; the number vaccinated was 491 against 261 in 1871,
the percentage of success being 75.11 against 88.28. The civil surgeon saw the majority
of those vaccinated, and can vouch for the accuracy of the return. The number vaccinated
within municipal limits amounted only to about 1.84 of the population, and only 20 were
children. Much prejudice against vaccination exists, and it is only domestic servants and
low caste people who will submit to the operation. Inoculation is extensively practised,
and Dr. Barker traced two outbreaks of small-pox to the practice. Two inoculators were
