whether considered with reference to the total number vaccinated or to the population of
the sexes.

Numerically the largest number of operations was performed on the Hindus, second on
the " other races," third on the Mahomedans, and least on the Christians. With reference
to population, the Christian population appear to have been best protected; next the " other
races," who form the bulk of the people in this circle, and of whom the Sonthals resisted
vaccination in some places; then the Mahomedans; and last the Hindus, who offered the
greatest resistance to vaccination. On the whole the rates of protection afforded are not
satisfactory. These remarks apply to the outcomes of both the Government and licensed
agencies.
Ages of the vaccinated.—Proportion
of infants vaccinated to number born.
97. The next table gives the ages of the vaccinated,
and indicates the proportion of infant vaccinations to the
number born during the year:—

It will be seen that of the total vaccinations the largest numbers operated on were
children of one year and under six; that the adults exhibit the next highest proportion; and
the infants the least. The figures representing the proportion of infants vaccinated to
number born simply indicate that a large proportion of the latter remain unprotected.
Cost of vaccination.
98. The total cost of vaccination during the year amounted to Rs. 6,001-14, or at the
rate of 1 anna and 5 pie for each successful operation,
excluding the work of the licensed vaccinators, against
Rs. 5,792-2-7, or 10 pie per case in 1879-80. Taking the licensed vaccinations into account,
