5. Recess work, i.e., work performed during the non-working season which
corresponds with the hot weather, is only carried
on to keep up the supply of lymph and in the
event of outbreaks of small-pox. The table in the margin shows the amount
of such work performed in each
circle and in municipalities separ-
ately during the non-working season
of 1890-91, as compared with the-
corresponding season of 1889-90.
It will be seen that there was an
increase of work in every circle,
except the Eastern Bengal Circle,
due to the greater prevalence of
small-pox during the hot weather
of 1890-91 than in the previous
year. In municipalities it will be
observed there was a decrease of
recess work.

The number of licensed vaccinators being far greater than that of the
Government and municipal vaccinators, the total number of operations per-
formed by the former is far larger than that performed by either of the latter;
but it will be seen from the last column but one of the statement that the
Government vaccinators performed on an average a far larger number of
operations per man than either the licensed or the municipal agencies. It will
also be observed that their average per man during the year under report was
much larger than it was in the previous year. Both the licensed and muni-
cipal agencies show a falling off in this respect.
